Parent's Retirement Home

I designed my parent’s retirement home that they will build in Saint George, Utah. It will be a secondary home until they are ready to make it their primary home. My parents are the clients, so I had them sketch the home. The project gave me experience working with clients and I designed it in Autodesk Revit. The reason I chose Revit is to expand my knowledge, remember and to gain experience.

My mother wanted me to design their retirement house. This gave me the inspiration to do it for the EDGE project. It helped because I already have something in mind and I was already learning the CAD (computer-assisted drafting) program. I was wanting to do this type of project, so I can have the experience to work with clients. It also helps me to start a portfolio of my work that I have done.

The type of challenges during the project was making sure my parents (clients) are checking their emails. Because I sent them updates and pictures of what I worked on. They live in northern Utah. I needed to call them, when I am in Cedar City and when I am up north, I needed to make sure to sit down with them, to discuss the progress and changes. The other challenge was using the CAD lab in the engineering technology building. I needed to use it in the afternoon because during the summer it closes at 5:00PM and I had work in the morning. I had no problems with the program except when the engineering department updated the programs. I needed to wait a week but it gave me the chance to talk with my clients about the house and any changes to make. I needed to make sure to make back-ups of my project, so if anything happens I don’t have to start over again.

This project benefited my parents because they want to find land in Washington fields, Washington, Utah. They plan to build it and use it as a secondary home. It will be for to escape the cold in northern Utah. Later, they will use the house as their primary home when they feel the need to move from northern Utah. The house is only one floor with no stairs. This accommodates their needs as they retire and age.

How this project benefited me was that I got the chance learn how to work with clients. It was not too hard because they were my parents and I understood what they wanted in the design. I made changes to what they wanted. I also got to use and learn the Autodesk Revit program. I got the chance to look back on other projects done in classes and learn from those ones. It was a great learning experience.
